Naoshima in the Rain: What to Do on a Rainy Day

Rain does not close Naoshima, but it changes which parts of the island are worth your time.

Most of what you came for is inside: the museums, the Art House Project and the bath. The weak points are outdoor works, the boats, and walking between sites. Here is what Benesse Art Site’s official pages actually say, so you can plan around them. Details checked on 5 November 2026.

What the Official Site Says About Weather

  • Typhoons and bad weather: Benesse Art Site says art facilities may be closed during typhoons or in other adverse conditions, and asks visitors to check the website.
  • Outdoor art: the Naoshima New Museum of Art page notes that outdoor exhibits may be closed in inclement weather, and its cafe terrace may be closed due to weather.
  • Ferries: the official first-timer page says boat schedules are subject to change or cancellation because of weather such as strong winds and fog.
  • Teshima: La forêt des murmures (the wind chimes) is not viewable in rain or severe weather.

The official pages do not state a general rain policy, a refund policy, or typhoon-closure rules for indoor works. If you have a timed ticket, check the website before you travel. Our ferry cancelled guide explains what to do if the boats stop.

Practical Rain Tips

  • Umbrellas: at Teshima Art Museum, large objects such as suitcases and umbrellas are not allowed inside, and the museum points you to coin lockers or the ticket center. Chichu and Lee Ufan Museum have similar rules for large objects, so keep your umbrella small and your hands free. See our museum rules guide.
  • Wet shoes: some Teshima spaces require shoes to be removed. Bring dry socks.
  • Getting around: an e-bike is the wrong tool in heavy rain. The town bus guide lists the alternative.

Finding Naoshima Note: Plan the order around the weather. Put your timed reservation first, then fill the gaps with sites you can enter on the spot. If heavy rain is forecast, move outdoor sights, such as the pumpkins, to a different day if your plan allows. See the pumpkin photo guide.

If the Day Falls Apart

If the ferry is cancelled or delayed, you may lose a timed ticket, so build in a buffer day when you can. Our how many days guide and visiting tips help you decide whether to add one.

Weather-related statements checked on the official Benesse Art Site pages on 5 November 2026.
