Naoshima Half-Day Itinerary: A 4–5 Hour Plan

With half a day, pick one focus: either a timed museum or the Honmura Art House Project, not both. The constraints that decide your day are fixed and official: last admissions, midday breaks and the last ferry. This plan builds around them. We have not timed walks or bus rides between sites, so allow a buffer. Facts below were checked on the official Benesse Art Site and Shikoku Kisen pages on 5 November 2026.

The Fixed Constraints

Check the Naoshima Mondays guide before you choose the day, since most museums are closed Mondays.

Option A: One Museum, Done Well

Benesse House Museum & Lee Ufan Museum — Is Naoshima Wheelchair and Stroller Friendly? A Local’s Honest Accessibility Guide (2 of 2)
  1. Book a timed Chichu slot first (see the Chichu guide).
  2. Arrive in good time, leave bags in a locker, and allow extra time for the museum.
  3. Add Lee Ufan Museum if time remains, since it admits visitors until 16:30 (see the Lee Ufan ticket guide).
  4. Head back to Miyanoura with a buffer for the ferry.

Option B: Honmura Art House Project

  1. Buy tickets at Honmura Lounge & Archive, which is open 9:30–16:30 and closed Mondays, and accepts cash, cards and PayPay. Online purchase is also offered. The five-house Multi-Site ticket is ¥1,200 online or ¥1,400 on-site, and Minamidera is sold separately at ¥600/¥700 by reservation.
  2. Visit houses in the order that avoids their breaks. Kadoya, Ishibashi and Haisha close 12:00–13:00, and Go’o Shrine and Gokaisho close 13:00–14:00.
  3. Fit your Minamidera slot around these.

Our Art House Project guide describes each house.

Finding Naoshima Note: Because the houses break at different times, you can visit the Go’o Shrine and Gokaisho group while Kadoya, Ishibashi and Haisha are on break, and the reverse. This avoids standing outside a closed door in the middle of the day.

Transport

Two buses and rental e-bikes are the main ways around, and they cover different ground.

  • Naoshima Town Bus: runs between Miyanoura Port, the ferry terminal and Tsutsujiso, passing through the Honmura district. It costs ¥100 for adults and ¥50 for children (age 5 to elementary school) per ride, cash only, with coins dropped in the fare box and no change machine. The official pages do not mention IC cards.
  • Benesse free shuttle: runs between Tsutsuji-so and Chichu Art Museum, with brief stops at Benesse House Museum and Lee Ufan Museum, every 20 minutes on days when many visitors are expected. Benesse House Museum and Chichu are not on the town bus route, so for Option A you need the shuttle, an e-bike or a walk. The shuttle does not operate on Mondays, when the museums close.
  • Timetables: the ride times between Miyanoura, Honmura and Tsutsujiso, and the first and last buses, are only in the official PDF timetables, which we could not read here. Open them before you fix your plan.

See the town bus guide and the e-bike guide. Check the Miyanoura locker guide if you have luggage.

If You Have More Time

A full day opens up Benesse House and the museums beyond. See the Naoshima 1-day itinerary and the how many days guide.

Hours and prices are from the official Benesse Art Site pages, checked on 5 November 2026. Walking and bus ride times are not included because we could not verify them.
