Teshima Art Museum Tickets: Price, Booking & Hours

Interior of Teshima Art Museum's dome-shaped hall with an oval ceiling opening framing the sky and trees, water droplets reflecting light on the concrete floor

Teshima Art Museum tickets are ¥1,800 online and ¥2,000 on-site, for a specific date and time.

Children 15 and under are free, though they still need a reservation. Entry is limited per time slot, and if the online tickets sell out, there are no on-site sales that day. That makes booking ahead the safe way to visit. All facts below come from Benesse Art Site’s official pages, checked on 5 November 2026.

How Booking Works

Your ticket is for a specific date and time. The museum page says advance reservation with date and time is required. The general ticket page warns that online tickets may sell out and recommends reserving before you visit. You manage and confirm online tickets through “My Page” on the Benesse Art Site booking system.

For groups, the official site limits tickets for the same time slot to eight people, and larger groups are split into groups of eight or fewer.

Finding Naoshima Note: We could not find a stated ticket release date or a cancellation rule on the official pages when we checked, so we are not guessing at them here. Open the booking page for your travel date, and pick your Teshima slot before you finalize your ferry times, not after. If you want the quietest start of the day, see the early-morning program below.

Hours and Last Admission

PeriodHoursLast admission

Closed Days (Check Before You Book a Ferry)

PeriodClosed
March 1 – November 30Tuesdays
December 1 – end of FebruaryTuesdays to Thursdays

The museum is open on national holidays but closed the next day. If a Monday is a national holiday, Tuesday is open and the closure moves to the following day. The official site lists the winter wording as Tuesdays to Thursdays, so ignore any older source that says a different pattern. For the full winter picture, see our Naoshima winter closures guide.

Early-Morning Viewing

The museum offers a special early-morning program from 9:00 to 10:00 (registration at 8:45) on selected Sundays.

It costs ¥2,300, including admission, and re-entry is possible only on the same day. The official page lists these Sundays: November 8 and December 13, 2026, and January 17, February 14 and March 14, 2027. Dates can change, so confirm on the museum page.

Rules Inside the Museum

This is a single, quiet space, and the rules are strict.

  • No photos, videos or sketching inside. Photography is allowed for the exterior, and inside the cafe and shop only.
  • Shoes off in some areas.
  • No fountain pens or ink.
  • No large items such as suitcases, umbrellas or tripods. Use a coin locker or the ticket center.
  • No touching the artwork. No phone calls, no smoking, no pets (service dogs are allowed).
  • Food and drink only in the cafe.

Our museum rules guide covers the same ground for Naoshima’s museums.

Cafe and Shop

The cafe and shop share the museum’s hours and are closed when the museum is closed. The cafe’s last order is 16:30 from March to September and 15:30 from October to the end of February. The cafe menu on the official page includes a lemon swiss roll (¥520, tax included) and, in summer only, a strawberry soda (¥560).

What You’ll See

Teshima Art Museum is a single work: Rei Naito’s Matrix, inside a concrete shell designed by architect Ryue Nishizawa. Water beads and moves across the floor under two openings to the sky. For how it compares to the museums on Naoshima, read Naoshima vs Teshima Art Museums.

Getting There

Official ferry fares and durations from the Benesse Art Site access page:

RouteTimeAdult fare
Miyanoura (Naoshima) – Ieura (Teshima)about 30 min¥820
Uno – Ieuran/a¥780
Takamatsu – Ieura (direct)about 35 min¥1,450
Ieura – Karaton/a¥300

The Miyanoura–Ieura service runs Mondays, Wednesdays to Sundays and holidays from March 1 to November 30, and Mondays, Fridays to Sundays and holidays from December 1 to the end of February. If the Teshima Art Museum is closed, the ferry will not stop at Teshima that day.

The museum’s address is 607 Karato, Teshima, Tonosho-cho, Shozu-gun, Kagawa, and parking is limited, so the museum asks visitors to use public transport. The official page for getting around Teshima has the on-island options.

Finding Naoshima Note: Allow time on both sides of your slot. A ticket is valid for a specific time, so a missed ferry can cost you the whole booking. Our Naoshima and Teshima in one day guide shows a workable timetable.
