What to Do in Naoshima on Mondays (When the Museums Are Closed)
If your Naoshima trip happens to land on a Monday, you’ve probably already seen the warning: most of the island’s headline museums are closed that day. Chichu Art Museum, Lee Ufan Museum, and Naoshima New Museum of Art are all closed on Mondays — and if that Monday happens to be a national holiday, they stay open and close the following weekday instead, so a “lucky” holiday Monday can still catch you out the day after. The Art House Project in Honmura follows the same pattern for most of its sites. One exception within it is stricter still: Kinza, the appointment-only site, is closed Monday through Wednesday except on national holidays, so it’s off the table for more than just Mondays.

Beyond Benesse House, Naoshima’s outdoor artworks don’t have opening hours at all. Yayoi Kusama’s Red Pumpkin at Miyanoura Port and the Yellow Pumpkin near Benesse House are viewable any day, Monday included.
If you’re willing to take a short ferry ride, Inujima is worth considering — the Inujima Seirensho Art Museum runs on a Tuesday-to-Thursday closure schedule (March–November) rather than a Monday one, so it’s typically open on the day everything on Naoshima itself is shut. Just confirm the ferry is running for your season, since winter service is limited.
