Where to Stay in Naoshima: Best Hotels, Ryokans, and Guesthouses by Area

Naoshima doesn’t have one “hotel district” — its accommodation is spread across four very different areas, each with its own character. Rather than one flat list, here’s what’s actually available area by area, drawn from the official Naoshima Tourism Association’s own accommodation directory plus our own deeper research on the standout picks.
The Short Answer: Four Areas, Four Different Naoshima Experiences

Miyanoura is the ferry-port area — most convenient if you’re arriving or leaving on a schedule. Honmura puts you inside the Art House Project district, walkable and atmospheric. Tsumuura/Kotohikichi is the quieter, beach-adjacent zone near the Benesse museums. And Tsutsujiso is a single, distinctive town-run beach lodge rather than a cluster of hotels — more on that below.
Finding Naoshima Note: Most of the smaller minshuku and guesthouses listed here don’t publish fixed rate cards the way hotels do — pricing depends on room, season, and meal plan. Where we could confirm a real number, we’ve included it; otherwise, check the official listing directly before you book.

Tsutsujiso (つつじ荘) — One Beachfront Facility, Three Ways to Stay

Here’s an honest correction to how this often gets presented: Tsutsujiso isn’t a cluster of separate hotels — it’s a single, town-run “furusato-umi-no-ie” facility right on Kotohikichi Beach, Naoshima’s southernmost point and the closest lodging to the sea on the whole island. Opened in 1992 by architect Kazuhiro Ishii, with a “Pao” yurt section added in 2006, it offers exactly three ways to stay:
- Trailer house
- Mongolian-style yurt (“Pao”) — a colorful, air-conditioned tent for a taste of nomadic-style camping
- Japanese-style cottage
Rates run around ¥7,700 per adult / ¥4,400 per child. There’s an on-site cafe, and Tsutsujiso doubles as a stop for the free Benesse Art Site shuttle bus, making it a workable base for museum-hopping despite its distance from town.
If you want more variety in the same beachfront neighborhood, a few Tsumuura/Kotohikichi options sit on the same stretch of coast:
- Cottage OHANA (癒しのコテージOHANA) — a cottage-style stay in the same coastal area as Tsutsujiso, per the official directory listing. A good alternative if Tsutsujiso itself is booked out.
Bonus Area: Benesse House (Museum Area)

Technically a fifth area of its own — the Museum Area exists for one reason: Benesse House, the island’s signature museum-hotel. It opened in 1992 with the Museum building, added the Oval building in 1995, then Park and Beach in 2006 — all four designed by Tadao Ando, each with a distinct character.
| Building | Opened | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Museum | 1992 | Sleep inside the museum itself; 24-hour gallery access for guests |
| Oval | 1995 | Panoramic Seto Inland Sea views, reached by a private monorail; also 24-hour gallery access |
| Park | 2006 | Overlooks sea, greenery, and outdoor art installations |
| Beach | 2006 | Right on the water’s edge |
Rates run from roughly ¥40,000 per night, though the exact current price depends on building, room, and season — we couldn’t find a reliable up-to-date rate card, so book through the official Benesse Art Site reservation system rather than trusting a fixed number here.
Finding Naoshima Note: Benesse House sells out months in advance during the Setouchi Triennale and peak seasons. If this is your first choice, book as early as your travel dates allow.
Booking Tips & Timing
- Most Miyanoura, Honmura, and Tsumuura minshuku and guesthouses don’t publish fixed online rates — contact them directly or check the official Naoshima Tourism Association directory for current availability and pricing.
- Smaller minshuku and guesthouses often favor cash — confirm payment methods when you book rather than assuming card is accepted.
FAQ

- Which area should I stay in on Naoshima?
-
Miyanoura if you want to be close to the ferry, Honmura if you want to be inside the Art House Project district, and Tsumuura/Kotohikichi if you’d rather be near the Benesse museums and beach. Tsutsujiso is worth it specifically if the beachfront yurt experience appeals to you.
- Is Tsutsujiso really the only accommodation option in that area?
-
As its own facility, yes — it’s one town-run complex with three room formats, not several independent hotels. But it sits in the broader Tsumuura/Kotohikichi area, which does have other beachfront minshuku nearby if you want more choice.
- Do Naoshima’s guesthouses take credit cards?
-
Not always. Many of the smaller minshuku and guesthouses are cash-focused — it’s worth confirming when you book rather than assuming.
- Is Benesse House worth it over the other options?
-
If sleeping inside the museum and getting after-hours gallery access matters to you, yes — that’s unique to Naoshima. If you just want a comfortable, well-located base, the options across Miyanoura, Honmura, and Tsumuura will serve you just as well for a fraction of the price.
