Floating in the Seto Inland Sea, Naoshima is a unique island where contemporary art and architecture coexist in harmony. At the heart of this transformation stands architect Tadao Ando.
Beginning with the opening of Benesse House in 1992, Ando has spent over three decades shaping the island through a series of architectural works.
His philosophy of harmony with nature has become deeply embedded in Naoshima’s landscape, leaving a lasting impression on all who visit.
A Museum Beneath the Earth – Chichu Art Museum

Opened in 2004, the Chichu Art Museum is a one-of-a-kind facility, with most of its structure embedded underground.
Relying almost entirely on natural light, the museum offers an extraordinary viewing experience. Works by Claude Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria are permanently installed, and the interplay between light, space, and artwork changes with the time of day and weather.
It is a place where art and nature converse in silence.
Deepening the Experience Through a Stay – Benesse House

Opened in 1992, Benesse House is a rare facility that serves as both a museum and a hotel.Contemporary artworks are placed throughout the building, allowing guests to enjoy them even after hours.
The architecture blends seamlessly into the landscape of the Seto Inland Sea, providing a deeply immersive experience where art, nature, and architecture become one.
A Dialogue Between Tradition and Modernity – ANDO MUSEUM

Located in Naoshima’s Honmura district, ANDO MUSEUM opened in 2013 within a traditional Japanese house over 100 years old. While preserving the traditional exterior, the interior features Ando’s signature exposed concrete, creating a quiet yet powerful contrast.
Inside, visitors can explore models and drawings that trace Ando’s architectural journey on the island and engage with his philosophy on a personal level.
Silence in the Valley – Valley Gallery

Opened in 2022, the Valley Gallery is an underground exhibition space built into a natural valley.Designed to harmonize with the surrounding terrain, the building appears to merge with the landscape itself.
The space offers a quiet, contemplative atmosphere that invites a deep and immersive experience.
New Chapter – Naoshima New Museum (Opening May 2025)

Naoshima’s newest museum is set to open on May 31, 2025.
Designed by Tadao Ando, this will be his tenth architectural project on the island. Located on an elevated site in the Honmura district, the museum will feature a three-story structure (two underground and one above ground).
Its inaugural exhibition will showcase a group of 12 contemporary artists from across Asia, offering a fresh dialogue between art and the region.
The exterior design incorporates black plaster walls and traditional stone fences to blend into the island’s vernacular landscape.
Conclusion

Tadao Ando’s architecture on Naoshima speaks quietly but profoundly. Each structure engages in a dialogue with nature, time, and human presence.
Rather than simply viewing artworks, visitors are invited to walk through the landscape itself, immersing themselves in the spaces where architecture becomes a way of thinking.
A journey to Naoshima is more than sightseeing—it is an experience of living philosophy.
