Discover “Go’o Shrine” – A Mysterious Fusion of Light and Space

As part of Naoshima’s House Project, “Go’o Shrine” is a unique space where traditional shrine architecture and contemporary art come together.

Originally, a shrine stood on this site, serving as a place of worship for the local community. However, through the House Project, it was reconstructed with artistic elements, transforming it into a work of art in itself.

The interplay between above and below ground, the use of natural light, and the incorporation of modern materials offer visitors a deeply immersive experience.

1.The Fusion of Tradition and Modernity – The Rebirth of a Shrine

Go’o Shrine is a reinterpretation of a traditional Shinto shrine within the context of contemporary art.

While maintaining the essential form of a shrine, the space is infused with modern artistic concepts, allowing visitors to engage with it in new and unexpected ways.

The architectural design preserves the sacred atmosphere of a traditional shrine while introducing a minimalist and refined aesthetic.

The use of wood and stone in the main structure harmonizes with the surrounding natural landscape, creating a tranquil and contemplative space.

2.The Underground Space and the Play of Light

One of the most striking features of Go’o Shrine is its underground chamber. In front of the main shrine, a transparent glass staircase descends into the earth, leading to a serene subterranean space.

This staircase serves as a symbolic threshold, blurring the boundary between the visible and the invisible, the material and the spiritual.

Light plays a crucial role in this experience.

During the day, sunlight filters through the glass steps, casting shifting patterns of light into the underground space.

As the light changes with time, the ambiance of the shrine transforms, making visitors aware of the imperceptible flow of time and the presence of the unseen.

3.Go’o Shrine as Art – A Dialogue with Space

Go’o Shrine is not merely a religious site but an architectural artwork in itself.

By merging the symbolic nature of a shrine with contemporary materials and structural elements, it invites visitors to engage in multiple layers of interpretation.

•The contrast between underground and above-ground spaces → Symbolizes the intersection of the visible and invisible, the physical and spiritual worlds.

•The transparent glass staircase → Serves as both an entrance to a sacred realm and a conduit for light, marking the passage of time.

•The use of natural light → Enhances the sense of stillness and invites contemplation.

These elements combine to create a space that is not just something to observe but something to experience, heightening the visitor’s awareness of their surroundings and inner self.

4.Conclusion – The Experience of Go’o Shrine

Go’o Shrine is a space where tradition and modernity, above and below, light and darkness converge.

The integration of architecture and art, combined with the subtle manipulation of light and space, invites visitors to engage in a sensory and philosophical journey.

In the stillness of the shrine, where light filters through the glass staircase, visitors may find themselves contemplating the passage of time, the presence of the unseen, and their own inner reflections.

As part of Naoshima’s House Project, Go’o Shrine offers one of the most profound and introspective experiences—an encounter with both art and spirituality.
