Naoshima—A Special Place Where Art Is Continuously Created

Naoshima is not just a place where art is displayed; it is a place where art is constantly being created.

Many artists come here to create new works, and these works will spread from Naoshima to the world.

When you step onto the island, you will notice that each piece of art carries a background, and there is an environment that fosters its creation.

1.Naoshima—Where Art Is Born

Artists often say, “It is only because it’s Naoshima that this work can be created.”

This is because the unique nature, history, and local culture of Naoshima encourage artistic creation.

Artists are inspired by the island’s landscapes and the lives of its people, and they turn Naoshima into a canvas for their new works.

Some of these works go on to have a global impact.

Naoshima’s charm lies not only in being a hub for art but also in being a place where artists receive inspiration and create new art.

2.”Special” Through the Eyes of the Locals

As a resident of the island, I, the writer of this article, sometimes fail to notice the “specialness” of Naoshima because I have become accustomed to life here.

However, when I pause to reflect, I realize that the power to create art is imbued in the island’s lifestyle, nature, and interactions among the people.

In fact, it is the artists who live alongside the island’s residents who create the art here, and this creative energy is cultivated through the everyday life of the island.

3.The “Special” for Visitors

For visitors to Naoshima, there may be moments when they encounter something “special” that they might not usually notice.

It could be the fusion of art and nature that they experience while exploring the island, or new discoveries made through interactions with the locals.

Naoshima teaches its visitors that the landscape itself is art, and the people are an integral part of that art.
