Naoshima 2-Day 1-Night Model Course (2026 Itinerary)

Takamatsu Port to Naoshima Timetable — Takamatsu Port to Naoshima Ferry Guide: Complete Timetable, Ticket Prices & Fast Boats

Once you’ve decided a day trip won’t cut it, the next question is how to actually split two days without either day feeling rushed or half-empty. The honest answer depends on one thing more than anything else: whether you managed to book Chichu Art Museum. Here’s how I’d structure it either way.

Before You Start: The One Date That Shapes Your Plan

1. Chichu Art Museum (The Fusion of Tadao Ando’s Architecture and Art) — Maximize Your Naoshima Art Experience: A Complete Time Guide

Chichu Art Museum only sells tickets for a given month starting on the 5th of the month, two months prior, and every visit is timed-entry. On-site window tickets exist (¥2,800 on weekdays, ¥3,000 on weekends and holidays), but they are sold out on most days, so book online. If you’re reading this while still planning, check availability before you build your day-by-day schedule, because which day Chichu falls on (if you got in at all) will decide how the rest of your two days line up.

Finding Naoshima Note: Don’t assume you’ll get a next-day slot if your first attempt doesn’t work out. Chichu sells out fast for popular dates, so treat a confirmed booking as the anchor of your whole itinerary, not an afterthought.

Scenario A: You Got a Chichu Ticket

Day 1 — Arrive in the morning, head straight into the Benesse House area. Start with Lee Ufan Museum and Naoshima New Museum of Art (both easygoing on reservations), then use your Chichu time slot for the afternoon. Since Benesse House Museum stays open until 9 PM (last entry 8 PM), save it for early evening — you can walk in fresh after the more demanding Chichu visit rather than rushing.

Day 2 — This is your relaxed day. Spend the morning in Honmura exploring the Art House Project, then wander at your own pace — Honmura’s cafes and the “I♥湯” bathhouse are good options if you want a slower final afternoon before your return ferry.

Scenario B: Chichu Didn’t Work Out

Day 1 — Without Chichu anchoring your schedule, start in Honmura with the Art House Project, then move to Lee Ufan Museum and Naoshima New Museum of Art in the afternoon.

Day 2 — Spend the morning at Benesse House Museum (no rush, since it’s open until 9 PM either way), and keep the afternoon flexible — this is a good day to check for a last-minute Chichu cancellation slot, or simply slow down and enjoy the island without a fixed checklist.

Finding Naoshima Note: A missed Chichu booking isn’t the trip-ruiner it feels like. Between Lee Ufan Museum, Naoshima New Museum of Art, and the Art House Project, two unhurried days still cover the island’s core experience — Chichu is a highlight, not the whole trip.

Where to Base Yourself

2. FRANCOILE — The Ultimate Guide to Naoshima’s Best Restaurants : 13 Must-Visit Eateries by Area! (1 of 2)

You don’t have to stay on Naoshima itself for this to work. If island accommodation is booked up or pricier than you’d like, basing in Uno Port or Takamatsu and taking the ferry over both mornings is a completely workable alternative — see our comparison of where to stay for a Naoshima trip for which option fits your plans best.

For the reservation specifics of each museum mentioned above, our dedicated guides cover exact booking windows and what to do if a slot is sold out: Chichu Art Museum, Benesse House Museum, Lee Ufan Museum, and Naoshima New Museum of Art.

Still not sure two days is even the right call? Our guide on how many days you actually need on Naoshima walks through that decision first. And if juggling five booking calendars across two days sounds like more coordination than you want to handle yourself, Finding Naoshima Tour runs a dedicated 2-Day Art Tour that handles the sequencing for you.
