Discover Gokaisho: A Dialogue Between Silence and Space

As part of Naoshima’s House Project, “Gokaisho” is a historical building that has been reconstructed into a contemporary art space.

While the name “Gokaisho” traditionally refers to a place associated with playing the game of Go, this site is not designed for playing Go.

Instead, it has been transformed into a space where the concepts of contemplation, dialogue, and spatial interaction—which are fundamental to the philosophy of Go—are expressed through architecture and art.

Reconstructing Space – The Intersection of Past and Present

Gokaisho

The original building of “Gokaisho” has been carefully preserved and reimagined to create a space that bridges history and contemporary art.

The House Project aims to reinterpret Naoshima’s historical and cultural heritage through artistic perspectives, and this project exemplifies that philosophy.

Rather than simply restoring the building to its original function, the transformation of “Gokaisho” gives it a new artistic meaning, inviting visitors to engage with the space in a different way.

The Meaning Behind the Name “Gokaisho”

Gokaisho

While a Gokaisho is traditionally a place where people gather to play Go, this particular installation is not about the game itself, but about the philosophy and spatial dynamics associated with it.

The game of Go is deeply rooted in concepts such as:

  • The balance of presence and absence – the placement of stones creates meaningful gaps, shaping the board dynamically.
  • Silence and contemplation – each move requires deep thought and strategic foresight.
  • Invisible dialogue and tension – players engage in a battle of wits that unfolds subtly over time.

In the same way, the space of “Gokaisho” reflects these elements through its architectural composition, encouraging visitors to engage in an unspoken dialogue with their surroundings.

The act of being present in the space becomes an experience in itself, much like the patient and strategic placement of stones on a Go board.

Position Within the House Project

Naoshima’s House Project repurposes old buildings into art spaces that blend history, architecture, and contemporary vision.

Among these projects, “Gokaisho” stands out as an artwork that emphasizes the relationship between people and space, rather than focusing on visual spectacle.

Rather than simply being a place to observe art, “Gokaisho” is a space to be experienced, where visitors can engage with its silence and architecture.

The way light, shadow, and emptiness interact within the space creates a meditative atmosphere, inviting contemplation and introspection.

Conclusion – A Space for Thoughtful Reflection

Gokaisho

Though named “Gokaisho,” this site is not a space for playing Go, but an artistic environment designed for deep contemplation and spatial dialogue.

By preserving the essence of the original structure while reinterpreting it through contemporary art, this project offers visitors a place for quiet reflection, engagement with space, and an experience of Naoshima’s cultural and artistic fusion.
