Where to Stay: Naoshima Island vs. Uno Port vs. Takamatsu
If you’ve started looking into where to sleep on your Naoshima trip, you’ve probably already hit the same wall I hear about constantly: the island itself has very few rooms, and a lot of them get booked out early. Before you resign yourself to whatever’s left, it’s worth stepping back and asking a different question — do you actually need to sleep on Naoshima at all?
The Short Answer
Staying on Naoshima itself is the right call if you want to wake up on the island, wander before the day-trippers arrive, or catch the museums in the evening quiet. But basing yourself in Uno or Takamatsu instead — and just taking the ferry over each day — is a completely legitimate strategy, and often an easier one to book.
Finding Naoshima Note: This isn’t an either/or for your whole trip. Plenty of visitors split it — one night on Naoshima for the atmosphere, then a night in Takamatsu for the food and city comforts before flying out.
When Staying On Naoshima Makes Sense
If your priority is soaking in the island itself — walking Honmura’s back streets at dusk, being first in line somewhere the next morning, or simply not dealing with a ferry schedule at all — staying on-island is worth the extra planning effort. The trade-off is real, though: fewer rooms, higher demand, and prices that can climb fast around the Setouchi Triennale and other peak periods.
When Basing in Uno Makes Sense
Uno Port sits just across the water from Naoshima, and it’s a genuinely underrated base — not just a place to wait for a boat. It has a hotel a minute from the ferry terminal, real local restaurants across a range of budgets, and an onsen worth building time around. Basing in Uno works well if you want:
- A calmer, less touristy base than Naoshima itself
- Shorter, more frequent ferry hops than from Takamatsu
- A soak in a proper onsen after a day of museum-hopping
When Basing in Takamatsu Makes Sense
Takamatsu is the biggest city in the mix by far — more hotel choices, more restaurants, and easy onward connections if you’re flying out or continuing elsewhere in Japan. - The widest range of hotel budgets and styles

Finding Naoshima Note: If you’re only doing Naoshima as a single day trip within a longer Japan itinerary, Takamatsu is usually the more practical base — you’re not committing a whole overnight stay just to see the island.
