Because Naoshima New Museum of Art only opened in spring 2025, a lot of what’s floating around online about tickets and hours is either guesswork or leftover pre-opening information. Here’s what’s actually true, confirmed directly against the museum’s own booking page.
The Short Answer: Book Online, Walk-Up Also Works
Online purchase is the museum’s primary recommended booking method, but same-day tickets are also sold at the entrance if you’d rather decide once you’re on the island.

The One Thing That Sets This Museum Apart: Cashless Payment
Most museums on Naoshima expect cash or, at best, a credit card at the ticket window. Naoshima New Museum of Art is notably more flexible: on top of cash and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB), the ticket counter also accepts e-payment methods including Alipay, WeChat Pay, and PayPay.
Finding Naoshima Note: If you’ve been carefully rationing your 100-yen coins for lockers and buses all trip, this is one museum where you don’t need to worry about having exact cash on hand.
Hours and Closing Days
The museum is open 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (last admission 4:00 p.m.) and closed on Mondays — if a Monday is a national holiday, it stays open and closes the following day instead, the same pattern used across the other Benesse Art Site museums.
Finding Naoshima Note: Note the earlier last-admission time here (4:00 p.m.) compared to some of the island’s other museums — don’t assume you have until closing time to squeeze in a visit after a full day of island-hopping.
Weather Can Affect Outdoor Exhibits
Part of the museum’s exhibition space is outdoors. In poor weather, these outdoor displays may be closed off even while the indoor galleries remain open. If rain is in the forecast for your visit day, it’s worth building in a flexible plan rather than counting on seeing every piece.

Tickets are sold through the Benesse Art Site Naoshima official website. As with the island’s other museums, online booking secures the lower price; walk-up tickets are available at the standard on-site rate whenever the museum is open.
